A woman with profound disabilities has been left deeply traumatised after an intruder broke in and ransacked her bedroom last night (Saturday, November 3) in Dungannon.
A 27-year-old man, matching the description of the suspect, was arrested a short time later in the Market Square area of the town. He is due to appear at Enniskillen Magistrates Court tomorrow (Monday, November 5) charged with burglary. As is normal procedure, the charge will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.
Detective Inspector Trevor Stevenson said police received a report around 8:50pm last night that entry was gained to a house in the town.
“The sole occupant of the house, a woman with severe physical disabilities, reported that a man had entered her bedroom. The suspect is believed to be around 5ft tall with a full bushy beard. He was wearing a lightweight jacket and denim jeans.
“A sum of money and a mobile phone was taken. The suspect also searched other rooms in the house before fleeing through a window,” he said.
Police believe this occurred sometime between 8:20pm and the time it was reported to them.
“This was a despicable act, which must have been frightening for the victim who was not only vulnerable but also completely helpless. While not physically injured she has been left deeply traumatised by this horrific ordeal,” added Detective Inspector Trevor Stevenson.
