A handbag containing cash and cards, and the contents of a jewellery box were stolen from a vulnerable, elderly woman during a ‘distraction burglary’ in Monkstown, Co Antrim, last night (Friday).
At around 6:30pm last night the woman answered her door to a man claiming to be from the Water Service.
He claimed that he was there to fix a burst pipe. He is described as being in his 20s and he was wearing a baseball cap and spoke with a local accent.
The woman accompanied the man into the kitchen where he unscrewed the u-bend under the sink. It is believed a second man entered the house and stole a handbag containing cash, cards, forms of ID as well as contents of a jewellery box. A short time later the first man walked out, claiming he would return in five mins, but he never appeared again.
Newtownabbey police are investigating the report of the distraction burglary in the area.
