Three residents in Co Antrim have been targeted this week by scammers claiming to be from HRMC.
Police have received three reports from householders in Newtownabbey, Ballyclare and Crumlin who answered calls from scammers alleging to be from the tax office.
They were told they owed money and if they did not pay up they would be arrested.
Police are reminding people to be wary of these scams.
“Remember: financial institutions, utility companies, law enforcement, HMRC, internet and telecoms providers or other public bodies will NEVER threaten arrest if payment isn’t made immediately,” said a police spokesperson.
This is the latest in a series of scams to affect homeowners in Northern Ireland.
Over half a million pounds was lost by individuals and businesses due to email scams during July in Northern Ireland.
Reports to police in recent weeks include losses from £20,000 to over £400,000 using a variety of scams.
The PSNI said there has been an increase in scams leading to losses of over £769,000 during the month of July.
Chief Superintendent Simon Walls this is a huge amount of money that has been lost, and the impacts are undoubtedly significant.
