McDonald’s has apologised for its Halloween-themed dessert called ‘Sundae Bloody Sundae,’ which referred to one of the most notorious events in the history of the Troubles in Northern Ireland.
A photo of the ad, for a two-for-one dessert offer, was posted on Twitter by a user who saw it in a restaurant in Portugal. The restaurant took down the material following complaints.
In a statement, McDonald’s Portugal said it had developed a ‘local market activation for a small number of its restaurants in Portugal’ and that it did not mean ‘to upset or insult anyone in any way.’
It added: “We sincerely apologise for any offence or distress this may have caused.”
