A memorial stone commemorating Major Hugh Colvin V.C was unveiled at Carnmoney Cemetery this afternoon.
Burnley-born Major Colvin was awarded his Victoria Cross for action in the First World War.
On 20 September, 1917 east of Ypres, when all the other officers of his company had become casualties, he took command and led them forward successfully under heavy fire.
He cleared dug-outs, killed some of the enemies and took a large number of prisoners.
His Victoria Cross is displayed at The Cheshire Regiment Museum, Chester, England.
He is buried in Carnmoney Cemetery.
Addressing guests gathered this afternoon were Cllr Paul Michael, Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey Council, Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant for Co Antrim, Mrs Joan Baird CVO OBE, and Dr Stephen McBride, the Mayor’s Chaplain, as well as Cllr Jim Bingham, President of the RBL in Whiteabbey.
