A mobility scooter user had a lucky escape in Magherafelt when his aid ended up under the wheels of a lorry this afternoon (Wednesday).
Police say users of mobility scooters are no more visible than a child to lorry drivers.
“If there is gap in traffic remember you could be crossing right in the blind spot of a lorry, bus or car,” said a police spokesperson.
The spokesperson described the incident as a ‘very fortunate escape.’
“If you use one of these or know someone who uses one, show them this and keep this picture in mind the next time you attempt to cross the road.
“There are various opinions on mobility scooters being on roads and pavements but they are covered by the Highway Code and law,” added a spokesperson.
The police have issued advice to mobility scooter users in light of this incident.
Class 2 vehicles are those with an upper speed limit of 4 mph are designed to be used on pavements.
Class 3 vehicles are those with an upper speed limit of 8 mph are equipped to be used on the road as well as the pavement.
The law regarding road use for Class 3 states

▪️a speed setting for 4 mph (for pavements and other off-road areas)
▪️maximum speed of 8 mph

▪️front and rear lights
