New COVID-19 variant found in other parts of UK, but not in Northern Ireland

A new variant of COVID-19 which is up to 70% more transmissible has been found in every part of the UK, apart from Northern Ireland.

That’s according to an expert who has been speaking to Sky News.


Dr Susan Hopkins, from Public Health England (PHE), said the strain is mostly spreading in London and SE England.

She said it has also been found in small numbers in every region of England, as well as Wales and Scotland.

The variant is named VUI-202012/01.

The UK has reported a record daily rise in confirmed coronavirus cases, with another 35,928 infections.
