‘No planned date’ for pupils to return to schools

There is no set date for schools to reopen as the COVID-19 outbreak continues.

Speaking at today’s daily update on the Executive’s response to the coronavirus pandemic, Peter Weir MLA said ‘there is no planned date’ for children to return to school.

There has been speculation that the reopening of schools would coincide with the beginning of a new academic year.

“Let me say clearly there is no planned date for reopening of schools for normal business – any decision guided by science and health advice, will not be date driven,” said Minister Weir.

He said the pupils’ return would be phased with remote learning continuing.

“This is probably the most crucial decision that this Executive will ever make so it is critical that all the details are right,” he said.

“We will work together collectively and intensively to reach a successful conclusion on this,” he said.
