A one month old calf is believed to have had its tongue cut out in a sickening attack in Donegal.
Gardaí are investigating the incident on the farm in the Moville/Greencastle area.
“It appears to have been sliced out. It’s the whole tongue that is gone,” the farmer told local media.
John, the farmer, said that he has been left shocked by the cruel incident. There were two calves in the pen at the time no cutting implements have been found.
“You have to ask yourself what kind of a sick individual would do something like this. When we were working with the calf afterwards he was not easy to hold. There is a level of restraint that had to be done here. When the vet came to stitch it up it just wasn’t an easy task – the calf basically had to be knocked out until the bleeding had stopped,” John told local media.
The calf is now believed to have difficulty suckling.
“It’s heartbreaking to watch it,” John said. “You have to ask yourself what kind of a sick individual would do something like this.”
John is asking other farmers to be vigilant.
