A passenger was hit on the head by a glass bottle that also shattered the car window of a vehicle.
The incident happened on the Suffolk road in west Belfast around 8pm yesterday, (Tuesday).
The driver was able to drive himself to hospital.
Sergeant Danielle Worth said police received reports that a large group of young people had gathered in the area.
She said police were informed that they threw stones at passing cars and lit a fire on nearby waste ground. However, when police attended, they dispersed, she said.
“Our enquiries are ongoing and I would appeal to anyone who witnessed this assault or has dashcam footage of it, to get in touch with police on the non-emergency number 101.
“Alternatively, information can also be provide to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous and gives people the power to speak up and stop crime,” she added.
