In her broadcast to the nation, the Queen has said the UK ‘will succeed’ in its fight against COVID-19.
The rare speech saw Her Majesty thank the doctors, nurses, carers and other frontline health staff, as well as those providing essential services.
The Queen also thanked people for adhering to government rules to stay at home to prevent the novel coronavirus from spreading.
The death toll in the UK has reached over 4,900.
This is the fifth time the Queen has delivered a speech during her 68-year reign.
While we have faced challenges before, this one is different.
This time we join with all nations across the globe in a common endeavour, using the great advances of science and our instinctive compassion to heal. We will succeed – and that success will belong to every one of us.
We should take comfort that while we may have more still to endure, better days will return: we will be with our friends again; we will be with our families again; we will meet again.
The Queen said we should remain ‘united and resolute.’
