Stretch for some yoga in Corrog Wood

Summer yoga will be held at Corrog Wood near Portaferry this summer to help raise funds for The Woodland Trust Northern Ireland.

Jane Campbell who has been teaching yoga for 21 years, will lead the sessions at Corrog Wood, an ancient megalithic site. The classes will include a combination of gentle movement, breath awareness and stillness in a sequence of postures conducive to an outdoor practice.

There are four yoga events taking place at 11am on 1, 8, 15 and 22 August.

Just a few of the benefits of yoga include improved sleep, reduced stress and anxiety levels, increased flexibility, improved concentration, inner and outer strength as well as protecting the spine and improving posture.

Jane said taking time out and connecting with nature is in itself healing and uplifting.

“I am planning to share a gentle practice with people of any ability, to enhance their experience in the woodland environment. We will take time to savour each pose to absorb the wellbeing benefits of our yoga practice.”

Lynsey Nixon of The Woodland Trust Northern Ireland said they are delighted to be able to offer an outdoor yoga event in one of their favourite woodlands.

“We want everyone to enjoy all the benefits of being outside in nature, and especially in the woods we look after in Northern Ireland. With yoga studios and gyms still closed due to the pandemic, this is a unique way to get your yoga fix with an experienced teacher present to guide you in person,” she added.

For your own personal protection and hygiene, please bring your own mat, towel and refreshments. The Woodland Trust is adhering to government recommendations and all participants will practice at a safe distance of at least 2 metres apart.

Each yoga session will last 1 hour, including a warm up and cool down. Places are extremely limited, so make sure to book early to secure your spot on the mat.
