The Christian owners of Ashers have won their appeal in the ‘gay cake’ discrimination case.
The Supreme Court ruled this morning that Ashers’ refusal to bake a cake with a slogan in support of same-sex marriage was not discriminatory.
The case began back in 2014 when Gareth Lee approached the bakery and it refused to create the cake with the slogan ‘Support Gay Marriage’ and a photo of Sesame Street characters Bert and Ernie.
Mr Lee sued Ashers Baking Company for discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation and political beliefs.
Ashers lost the case and the appeal, but this morning (Wednesday) the firm won its case at the Supreme Court.
Owners Daniel and Amy McArthur earlier said the law risked ‘extinguishing’ their consciences. They were in London for the court’s ruling.
The legal action against Ashers was taken by Mr Lee with support from the Northern Ireland Equality Commission.
