Two men approached a young woman’s car this morning while she was stopped at traffic lights in Newtownards and tried to open the doors.
Police say the woman was driving to work and had stopped at the lights at the junction between Hardford Link and Belfast Road at around 6:30am.
They’re now reminding drivers to use the auto lock function on their cars at all times when driving.
“She was alert enough to see them approach and managed to lock the doors quickly preventing them from getting in. Once they realised the doors were locked they ran off,” said a PSNI spokesperson.
Police said this was no doubt a terrifying experience for the young lady and her quick thinking has prevented the men taking her car.
“It all happened very quickly and the only description she got was that both looked in early twenties and were dressed in dark clothing,” said a police spokesperson.
“Many newer cars will have an auto lock feature but if you are driving on your own it does no harm to lock the doors manually when driving just to make sure you are safe. In regards to this incident, we will be checking CCTV in the area in an attempt to see if we can identify the suspects.
