A woman from Antrim has lost nearly £12,000 through a scam.
She is the latest person to fall victim to callous scammers.
In this case, the caller claimed to be from her bank and told her to transfer money as her account ‘wasn’t secure.’
Scamwise NI says financial institutions will NEVER ask you to transfer money because your account has been compromised.
In a separate incident, a woman from Lurgan was told she owed money for unpaid tax and would be arrested if she didn’t pay.
She was ordered to pay £1,500 using Amazon vouchers which she then went and purchased from a local shop.
“The lady scratched off the serial numbers and sent a picture of them to the scammer which is practically the same as giving them money,” said a Scamwise NI spokesperson.
Retailers are being advised to tackle customers if they suspect they are buying large quantities of vouchers.
“If you work in retail and someone is buying a lot of vouchers, ask them why! If they say it’s a present, ask them again! Tell them about this scam and ask if that’s what’s happening to them. You could potentially save somebody hundreds and hundreds of pounds,” added the spokesperson.
