The DUP’s Ian Paisley has retained his seat in Westminster after fewer than 10 per cent of the constituents signed a petition which would have triggered a by-election.
Mr Paisley was suspended from Westminster for failing to declare two holidays paid for by the Sri Lankan government.
The petition was the first in UK Parliamentary history and was available to sign over a period of six weeks at three constituency centres.
Mr Paisley said the people of North Antrim had ‘clearly spoken’ and he thanked his supporters for retaining him.
The petition required a total of 7,543 signatures – or 10% – to trigger a by-election.
